On desktop computers and mobile devices, YouTube crops away the peripheral areas of your canvas to fit responsive screen aspect ratios. The safe area is the geometric intersection of all supported viewports. This negligible difference occurs solely because pixel coordinates must be rounded to the nearest integer. The two numbers are not competing rules; they are the same physical viewport rectangle rendered at different canvas pixel densities.

To prevent banner crop headaches and eliminate repetitive upload cycles, follow these five core principles when designing your channel art:

1Keep Core Branding Exclusively Inside the Safe Zone

Your channel name, publication schedule, tagline, sponsor logos, and portrait face must sit completely within the 1546 × 423 pixel boundary. If any typography extends outside this box, it will be clipped on mobile phones.

2Span Background Textures Across the Entire 16:9 Canvas

Never export just the safe-area rectangle on a transparent or white background. Always extend your background scenery, 3D artwork, geometric patterns, and gradients to the full 2560 × 1440 bounds. This ensures your banner looks immersive on television screens.

3Add a 20-Pixel Internal Buffer Margin

4Clear the Desktop Channel Links Area
